Tim

Tim’s story is powerful proof that your generosity provides more than a temporary solution to homelessness.

Tim never wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father, who died from alcoholism when Tim was only 7. But the grip of addiction got a hold of Tim early. By age 12, he was smoking and drinking and felt like he had no real control.

After his dad passed, Tim and his sister went to live with their grandparents while his mom worked. Despite their love, Tim struggled following the loss of his dad.

Tim got married in his early 20s while he was also serving in the military. The birth of his first son followed and he was ready to lead a responsible life. But he wasn’t ready to pursue sobriety. Tim became a functional drinker, going to work, coming home, and getting drunk every evening. He and his wife ultimately divorced. But he still struggled to break free from his addiction. Instead, he hoped new love would bring him the change he needed, so Tim married again.

Tim says, “I remember telling my wife, ‘I feel spiritually sick.’ I was like the living dead. My life was in shreds.”

And Tim knew it was because of alcoholism. He had his last drink in June of 2020, and checked himself into a rehab program. Tim put in the time and the work to change his ways, and he successfully recovered.

But he wasn’t prepared for the new dynamic between him and his wife — he was a different person sober. They struggled for six months while he was looking for work during the latter part of the pandemic. Tim’s wife decided to divorce him.

He was left with no support system. He found himself with no job and no place to live; he was homeless. The VA provided him with emergency shelter, but not the resources to help him rebuild his life. So he searched, and his search brought him to the Rescue Mission and the Tustin Veterans Outpost.

Because of YOU, Tim did not end up on the streets, he maintains his sobriety, and he has found a life-changing relationship with God. Today, he is full of hope as he looks forward to being a grandfather and pursuing a purposeful career.
