How will we get our next meal?
Where will we sleep tonight?
Who can we trust with our little ones?
Homeless and raising three kids, Keith and Heather found themselves asking these questions every day.
Today, they have a fresh start for their family, thanks to you.
Keith and Heather grew up in a small Oklahoma town, where they both felt alone in their search for stability.
Heather was raised by a mom struggling with alcoholism. Keith spent his childhood in foster homes before being adopted at 12.
After high school graduation, Keith joined the military and became addicted to alcohol. Heather, who regularly used drugs, was kicked out of her mom’s home at 22 with a newborn baby and nowhere to go.
From the start of their relationship, the pair faced immense struggle. As their family grew, so did the burden of homelessness and the grip of addiction.
Keith knew he needed to quit drinking and eventually entered a recovery program in California that a family member recommended to get clean. He needed to get away from the environment that fostered his alcoholism, and their small town had limited resources and opportunities.
Meanwhile, Heather continued to struggle with addiction while putting herself through school and caring for the kids. She reached out to a local rescue mission for help, but their programs could not keep the family together.
Finally sober and desperate to lead his family into a healthy way of life, Keith heard about Tustin Veterans Outpost, and the rest of the family joined him in California. Although they were not guaranteed acceptance, this was their last hope. For their first month in California, the family was homeless, often living in a tent.
One day, they got a call that changed everything. Their lives were about to be transformed, thanks to friends like you!
The couple will never forget the day they received their move-in date at the Veterans Outpost.
“I had felt so depleted before that phone call,” says Keith. “I can’t begin to describe how it felt to come in off the streets and walk into our apartment.”
These days, Keith and Heather no longer worry about where their kids are going to sleep at night. From marriage counseling to job training and resources for their kids, YOU have given them everything they need to rebuild their lives together.
Recently, Keith and Heather experienced big losses with the passing of both of their moms. Their newfound strength, character, and dependence on God allowed them to spend time in Oklahoma with their families and remain sober through a difficult time.
Your generosity gave them this opportunity to change and grow.
“Every little part matters,” says Keith. “Your giving matters. If I could, I’d give you a big ol’ hug and say, ‘Thank you!’”
