Volunteer Opportunities

We’re excited that you are interested in volunteering at the Orange County Rescue Mission!  When you offer your time and skills and serve alongside the staff and residents, you support both the vision and work of the Rescue Mission.  We have two basic ways you can get involved:

Volunteer Staff
This level of service entails a regular, weekly or monthly shift, and requires a level of time and commitment. This is an immense opportunity to really get involved at the Mission, build relationships with staff and residents, and see change and progress happen over time.

Parenting and Child Enrichment Center: Weekly shifts are available both during the regular working day (Monday-Friday, 9:00am to 4:30pm), as well as in the evenings (Monday through Saturday, 6:45pm to 8:30pm)!  Job duties vary based on the day and time. Weekday shifts involve working with parents to provide practical, biblical, heart-based parenting training. Evening shifts involve working directly with the children while their parents remain onsite, but in chapel, bible studies, groups and other activities as part of their individualized treatment plan.  This is our greatest ongoing need!

Tutoring: We are in need of tutors (age 18 and older) that are able to help our school aged children with homework. Help is needed Monday through Thursday from 2:30 to 4:00 at the Village of Hope in Tustin and the House of Hope in Orange.

Licensed Medical Professionals: We are looking for nurses, doctors, dentists, and other medical professionals that are willing to give of their time to serve our residents and the public at our transitional housing facility, as well as travel on our mobile medical units within Orange County and serve the homeless in our community.  Times vary.  The application involves a credentialing process.

Chefs/Culinary Students: We are looking for chefs or culinary students who can commit to a shift, helping prepare a meal for 150-500 people.  Shifts are generally 6 hours and on a weekly basis.

Hair Stylists: We are looking for stylists who can come in and cut hair in our on-site salon! Appointments can be made according to your availability.

Administrative Support: We are in need of volunteers to assist with administrative tasks during normal business hours Monday through Friday. Duties can include assisting staff with computer and internet based tasks, filing, and other work as needed.

Sponsor a Monthly Birthday Party: We host monthly birthday parties for our residents, in which we celebrate all the residents (men, women, and children) who have had a birthday that month.  This is a great group activity, and would involve bringing cakes, and a birthday card with a $10 Starbucks gift card for that month’s resident birthdays.  There are usually 8-12 adult birthdays per month.  (The overall cost is about $200.)  Your group can come and join our staff and the residents for dinner in our dining hall, and then celebrate the birthdays for dessert! Parties are generally scheduled several months in advance.

Host a Drive (Urgent Needs, Food, or Hygiene Kits): We are in need of continual support for daily operating costs.  You can hold a drive and collect needed items at your school, church, place of employment, community center, or neighborhoods-it’s an easy and very significant way to support the Rescue Mission! This is the best way for volunteers under the age of 13 to get involved! As volunteer needs arise that match your interests, we will be able to schedule you! Our greatest need is for regular, individual volunteers; we only have limited opportunities for group projects.

Don’t forget to check with your employer to see if they match money for volunteering or if they are involved in a corporate giving program to maximize your gift of service!
