The Ultimate Help

The Orange County Rescue Mission facilitates many effective programs which serve as a source of help to many Orange County residents. However, there is another kind of help without which all of the most effective programs in the world are useless. Of course, our programs will bring a great measure of assistance to those who apply themselves. But the only help that will have a lasting impact is that which comes from God.

Jesus asked, “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” That’s why everything we do here is centrally focused on Him. Ultimately, it is only God’s help that can produce enduring change.

How to get it

Many are fond of saying, “God helps those who help themselves.” Nothing could be further from the truth. God helps those who realize they need His help! The first step in obtaining help from God is to humbly admit that you need it.

But that raises a very good question. The Bible says that all have sinned, and that the consequence of that sin is eternal separation from God. How can we whose sin has separated us from God ever hope to approach Him? How can we be confident enough to come to God for help when we don’t know if He will accept us?

The answer is wonderful, but not complicated. The Bible says, “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” In laymen’s terms, that means that even though we all, by virtue of our own sin, deserve to be eternally separated from God, His love for us moved Him to provide a way of escape.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, God’s gift to us, was nailed to a cross in payment for our sins. Jesus satisfied God’s demand for justice by dying in our place. The Bible says, “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The way of escape from the punishment we all deserve is in Him, and in Him alone.

It’s Not Automatic

Imagine a father leaving an inheritance deposited in a bank account in his son’s name. If the son either neglects or refuses to claim that inheritance, he will never enjoy its benefits. So it is with eternal life. The payment has been made. The gift has been offered. Anyone who puts his trust in Jesus as Savior and submits to Him as Lord receives the forgiveness of sins provided for by His death on the cross and gains God’s acceptance based, not on any merit of his own, but on the merit of Jesus’ sacrifice.

What now?

Ask yourself one question: If today was your last day on earth, do you have the confidence that you would be accepted by God into heaven? If not, you can gain that confidence now!

  • Admit to yourself, and then to God that you are guilty before Him and undeserving of His love.
  • Trust in Jesus as the One who has purchased forgiveness for your sins with His own blood.
  • Thank God for accepting you as one of His children.

You can pray a prayer like this:

“God, I know I’ve sinned against You and deserve the punishment of eternal separation from You. I put my trust in Jesus Christ and the price He paid for the forgiveness of my sins. I declare that, from this day forward, Jesus Christ is my Lord and my Savior. Thank you for accepting me into your family, and providing an eternal place with You in Heaven.”

The Bible says, “…to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…” Also, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
