Hope Family Housing, Buena Park
A strikingly beautiful new neighborhood opened up in Buena Park! This small, exclusive community has a community center with granite countertops, seventeen 2-3 bedroom family units with designer colors, light fixtures, and a colorful tot lot, all of which will be home to homeless families transitioning into the community. This project began as a vision of the City of Buena Park, HomeAidOC, and the Orange County Rescue Mission as they met together to address the needs of the homeless in Buena Park. On May 6, 2008, they gathered at a Dedication Ceremony celebrating the completion of Hope Family Housing Buena Park. Nearly 200 people were in attendance at the dedication which represented the over 150 companies and volunteers who worked generously together to make this $5.5 million community a reality.
Beginning with a one-acre lot donated by the City of Buena, HomeAidOC asked John Laing Homes to be the Builder Captain of this community and they were joined by key contributors, Bassenian/Lagoni Architects, the Building Industry of America, and the Children and Families Commission of Orange County. HomeAidOC is the founding chapter of a national non-profit organization with the mission to build dignified housing where homeless families and inpiduals can rebuild their lives.
This newest transitional housing community will be managed by the Orange County Rescue Mission, and will consist of housing for a Manager’s Apartment and 16 units of long-term housing for homeless families. These families will come from motel environments or OCRM facilities where they have progressed through various life-changing instructions. It is designed to provide a final phase of transition for homeless families, with the primary focus of the program to provide HOPE through an environment of independent living with supportive services over a six-month to two-year period.
This project is a great step forward in providing additional affordable housing stock to Orange County’s inventory. The 17 apartment-style units range from 900 to 1,100 square feet. Each apartment will have a kitchen, dining room, 2-3 bedrooms, a bathroom, laundry room, and access for parking. In addition, there is a spacious common outdoor play area for children and a 1,500 square foot common meeting room and computer room.
