The family was smart enough to flee before the storm. As they moved from relative’s house to relative’s house, they got word of family members who were either missing or killed! Exhausted and in great need, they ended up in California and found compassion and immediate help from people like you through the Orange County Rescue Mission. We helped them get into an apartment. They had nothing no furniture, kitchenware or clothes. The emotional stress of so much loss, uncertainty and worry was affecting each of them. The children, who had been great students, were in public school for the first time and were acting out and failing. They asked questions like, “Why did God let this happen to us? Is God punishing us?” Tyrone went back to Louisiana to salvage their lives and found nothing but barriers to getting back on their feet. The insurance companies wouldn’t pay on the flood insurance, claiming it was the wind that did the damage. A year later the case is still in court, and there is no money for repairs. Is there any good news? Yes, people of faith reached out. We were here to help Antoinette with everything from groceries to prayer support. Back in New Orleans, church people helped families set up tents to live in on the families’ own property. Once Tyrone found work, we were able to help Antoinette and the children move home. It may be a tent, but it’s home. Antoinette says, “You were a beacon of light in our time of darkness. Every institution failed us, but you were there. If it wasn’t for that little place in the center of California, I don’t know what we would have done. Thank you.” * Name changed to protect privacy. |

Of all the needs the Orange County Rescue Mission faces, there is none greater than the need for FOOD, especially during the holiday season when food is needed to stock our residential pantries. In addition to the people who come to our doors during the holiday season, we reach out to 42 motels in 11 cities throughout Orange County. At Thanksgiving, we offer Boxes of Hope filled with food items most needed by our clients. If you'd like to take part in filling these boxes and giving a homeless family something for which to be thankful, call Janet at (714) 247-4334. Food deliveries can be made to our warehouse from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the following address: 1421 Edinger, Suite B, Tustin, CA 92780 Click here for a list of needed food items... |

On Saturday, September 30, the Orange County Rescue Mission partnered with six Ralph's grocery stores to conduct the first of four planned “Heart for Hunger” food drives. Approximately 5,000 pounds of food was collected and will go a long way towards fortifying our supplies for the upcoming holiday season. On behalf of the Least, the Last and the Lost of Orange County, OCRM extends it's hearty THANKS to the following people who made this drive such a great success:
If you would like to get involved with the next three food drives scheduled in 2007 (1/20, 5/12 & 9/29), call OCRM’s volunteer manager, Janet Marino, at (714) 247-4334, for more details. |

Community groups, churches, families, individuals, and businesses here’s a great way to help homeless families stay together while they rebuild their lives and become self-supporting: Adopt a family suite or a room in the Village of Hope! The Village of Hope is an innovative, faith-based, transitional facility that will keep homeless dads, moms, and kids together, while giving parents 12 to 24 months to work on job training and life skills. To make this dream a reality, we must complete the transformation of two existing military dormitories into 128 rooms for homeless families. A plaque with your name, or your group’s name, will be placed in the room. More importantly, your group will be part of creating modern-day miracles in the lives of hurting families in Orange County. Please e-mail John Luker or call (714) 247-4306 for more info. You can also check our Web site for volunteer work dates, construction needs, prayer requests and more. |

On the last drive, a group of teenage girls volunteered for a five-hour shift. I’d say they were 13 years old. Their parents had been instructed to have each one bring a bottle of water and some lunch money. Suggested amount: $5. The girls had such a good time, they volunteered to come back to the Mission to sort cans and boxes! Back at the Mission, one of the group leaders pulled me aside and pointed to two large boxes of groceries. He said every one of the girls had skipped lunch and used their money to buy groceries for the Mission instead! Those were the groceries. The girls weren’t bragging about it. I never would have known. Amazing. Every year people ask for my advice about how to raise children who are grateful for all they have. I say ask these young ladies’ parents. My guess is their parents live out their faith in front of them. They see their parents expressing kindness, mercy and compassion. And the parents make sure their children have opportunities to serve others. My guess is they are a lot like many of the families who donate to the Rescue Mission. Their gratitude for all they have spills over into service for the less fortunate. Thank you for all you do. I pray you will let your generosity spill over again this Thanksgiving season to feed hungry men, women and children in Orange County. God bless you as you bless others. In His Service,

The Orange County Rescue Mission offers an exciting Vehicle Donation Program. When you’re ready to put that old vehicle to good use, call us and we will conveniently come pick the vehicle up, handle all of the DMV paperwork and provide you with a 100% tax-deductible receipt. Best of all, 100% of all net proceeds will go directly to serving the Least, the Last and the Lost of Orange County. Now THAT is a wise investment! |
