A Tough Choice

Here is the dilemma that hundreds of families in Orange County are faced with on a daily basis: an extremely limited income forces them to choose between food on the table and a table on which to eat food. They can eat or they can pay rent—not both. Consequently, basic survival dictates the choice. Human beings must eat and, therefore, the struggle to keep a roof over their heads places these families on the brink of homelessness.

Enter OCRM's War on Hunger food assistance program.

There is a very real war taking place in the poverty motels of Orange County, a war the outcome of which, for some, means the difference between hope for a better life and the dread and despair of life on the streets. It is just such a war—a war on hunger—which the Orange County Rescue Mission is waging on behalf of those who cannot fight for themselves.

Each month, we distribute an average in excess of 4.3 tons of food (325,000 meals annually) to 42 motels in 11 cities throughout Orange County. This is accomplished through “fixed” pantry sites, deliveries from case managers and the use of our War on Hunger Vehicle, a state-of-the-art mobile food pantry equipped with onboard refrigerator and freezer compartments.

For those who have committed to participating in our Strong Beginnings Program, this supplement allows them to take money that would otherwise be spent on food and begin positioning themselves to escape the motel life and get into an apartment of their own. Without the assistance of this program, this would not be possible.

As you can see, the Orange County Rescue Mission goes through a lot of food and it gets especially lean during the Summer months. If you'd like to help, you can organize a food drive through your church or place of business, or send a donation through our secure online server.

Thank you and God bless you!                    Top
